Description: State Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton is elected to represent constituents of the 27th District in the Michigan House of Representatives. Her district includes all of Huntington Woods, Berkley, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Hazel Park and a portion of Oak Park. Her office is located in Lansing, Michigan. A Democrat, Rep. Lipton serves on the Appropriations Committee and is a member of the subcommittees for K-12 School Aid, General Government and Community Colleges.

Interns will be expected to provide assistance to Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton and members of her staff ranging in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs, general office management and miscellaneous tasks. Students will gain valuable hands-on office experience in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities may include: answering phones, monitoring legislation, issue research and written correspondence to groups and individuals within the 27th District. Interns with journalism experience may be asked to help write content for press releases, draft talking points and make media phone calls. Interns with access to transportation may be given opportunities to attend events and help with projects in the Representative's district.

Salary Range: School credit, if applicable

Availability:
We are currently hiring interns for all of the 2012 semesters. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Interns can work full or part-time, minimum 16 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be a student enrolled in a community college or university. Excellent telephone, written communication skills and a positive attitude are required. Strong letter writing skills are necessary (writing sample must be provided). Knowledge of the legislature and the legislative process is a plus, but not required. Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required.
