Newly elected House Members and newly hired House employees are no longer eligible for pensions. Both Members and employees are in a 401(k) system.

1997 - LEGISLATIVE RETIREE HEALTH CARE RESTRICTED House Members must be age 55 before receiving health care upon retiring from the Legislature (if eligible after serving a full three terms).

2011 - LEGISLATIVE RETIREE HEALTH CARE ELIMINATED Effective October 18, 2011, retiree health care benefits were eliminated for any Legislator who has not completed at least six years of service as a Legislator before January 1, 2013.

2012 - 80/20 & HARD CAP COMPLIANCE (PA 152 of 2011)
The continuing goal of the Michigan House of Representatives is to provide a quality and comprehensive benefit package to its Members and employees in the most cost-effective manner. In FY 2010, the House's health care costs were $5,849,000. In FY 2011, the costs were $5,193,000. In FY 2012, the costs are estimated to be $3,571,000 (a 30% reduction). The reduced costs for FY 12 are in large part to the House's compliance with Public Act 152 of 2011, which limits a public employer's expenditures for employee medical benefit plans. The House offers health care plan options with coverage levels for single, two-person or family. Current participant levels and PA 152 compliance are as follows:
