How do I set up my PC to work with the House WiFi network?
Most devices with wireless network capability should detect and enable your access automatically (provided that the wireless networking function is enabled.) However, while most computer wireless network configurations are similar at a basic level, the endless possibilities that comprise the individual settings for your home, school or work environments, make offering specific connection directions difficult.

Will the information on my laptop be safe from “eavesdropping” and hackers?
It is your responsibility to protect any "sensitive" information you may send or receive through our system.
Think of the wireless system as being similar to a "party line" where someone could "listen in" on the conversation. We run the wireless network in what is referred to as "Open Mode". We do not use any encryption between the wireless Access Point and your wireless device. Anyone using "wireless packet sniffing" software may be able to "see" what you are viewing or sending.
The security of your laptop is your responsibility. The House of Representatives does not provide firewall, spyware or virus protection software to the public.
We recommend that you install the latest updates to your virus and spyware detection applications. We also strongly suggest that you apply the most recent security patches that are released from various software vendors. (Windows Updates is a great resource if you are using a Microsoft Windows operating system).

How do I know if my laptop is compatible with your network?
As long as your laptop has a wireless network card that is 802.11b or 802.11g compatible, you'll be able to access the public network. If your laptop came with built-in wireless capabilities, it’s very likely that it is already compatible with the network.
NOTE: Even though you may have a 802.11g wireless card in your laptop you will only get 802.11b connectivity on the House public WiFi network. You may also experience an even slower connection if there are several computers using the network in a relatively small area, basically sharing a single access point.

Ever since I used the House WiFi network, my computer can't connect to the Internet anymore when I'm at the office or at home, why?
